Importing Saved Internet Explorer Favorites to a New Computer

It seems like every time I get my favorites ‘just right’ on my computer it’s time to either reformat or get a new computer!  I know this may seem like a little thing, but I really depend on a good, well organized, favorites bar in IE – and it’s so quick and easy to move them around.

  • The first question I get asked is how to find the Menu bar in IE. 
  • If yours isn’t showing, simply right click in the upper part of your toolbar and check ‘Menu Bar

  • Next, click on File>Import and Export

  •  Select Export to a File

  •  Select what you want to export, you can do these all together or save them as different files.

  •  Click Next and select which folder(s) you want to export:

  •  Then select where you want to save the file:

  • Now that you’ve saved your file you can restore it to any other computer you’d like.
  • To restore everything from the backup, click the “Favorites” button, click the arrow next to “Add to Favorites” and then choose “Import and Export” from the menu to open the Import/Export Settings window.
  • Click the “Import from a file” radio button and then click “Next.”

  • Check the “Favorites” box if you want to import only your favorites.
  • If you exported your feeds and cookies and want to import them as well, check the “Feeds” and “Cookies” boxes. Click “Next.”
  • Click the “Browse” button, use the file browser to select the backup you created earlier, and then click the “Open” button. Click “Next.”

  •  Select the root/main folder – it’s usually labeled “Favorites” – and click “Next

  • ClickBrowse” and select the OPML file from the folder where you saved the favorites, and click “Next”.  Select the root/main folder – usually labeled “Feeds.” Click “Next” and then repeat the process to select the TXT file that contains the cookies.
  • Click the “Import” button to import your favorites, feeds and cookies. The import is complete when the “Favorites,” “Feeds” and “Cookies” options are checked.
  • ClickFinish” to close the Import/Export Settings window.

 That’s it!  Now you can have your perfect setup on every computer, it’s really fast and easy – give it a try!
